Jesús (‘Suso’) Trujillo Vázquez was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands), Spain in 1954.
He received his M.Sc. Degree in Chemistry in 1978 at the University of La Laguna, where he was awarded the M.Sc. Special Prize.
In 1983 he went on to gain his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the same University, under the supervision of Professors Antonio González González
and Gabriel de la Fuente Martín. Between 1985 and 1987 he was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Koji Nakanishi at the Chemistry Department of Columbia University,
New York, working on Circular Dichroism Applications and on Microscale Structure Determination of Oligosaccharides.
He moved back to the University of La Laguna as Assistant Lecturer (Organic Chemistry Department), and in 1989 was promoted to Senior Lecturer
where he started his independent research, mainly on stereochemical studies: absolute configurations and conformations. Since 1999 he has held a full Professor position at the University.
His research interest includes synthesis and conformational analysis of carbohydrates and glycomimetics, determination of absolute configurations of natural and synthetic compounds,
and circular dichroism applications.
He was the Secretary of the Instituto Universitario de Bio-Orgánica “Antonio González”
from October-1995 to October-1999, and Director of the Organic Chemistry Department from February 2001 to March 2006.
